Checklist of Iowa Mammals with Atlas Links        
The Iowa Gap Analysis Mammal List contains 61 species, of which, 57 were modeled for Gap Analysis. Iowa has 40 species that are considered common in the state. The Indiana Bat is both Federal and State Endangered, while the Plains pocket mouse, Red-backed vole, and bobcat are only State Endangered. The Least shrew, Northern Grasshopper mouse, Spotted skunk, and re-introduced River otter are considered State Threatened. Other mammal species of concern in Iowa that are either rare or uncommon within their range are: White-tailed jackrabbit, Franklin's ground squirrel, Richardson's ground squirrel (short-lived vanguard population), Flying squirrel, Southern bog lemming, Woodland vole, gray fox, ermine, Long-tailed weasel, Least weasel, bobcat, and mule deer.
     
Mammals extirpated from the state include: Pygmy shrew, Eastern woodrat, porcupine, Gray wolf, Swift fox, black bear, marten, fisher, wolverine, mountain lion, lynx, moose, and pronghorn antelope.
