Durham Center

GIS Support and Research Facility

With a mission to support GIS research, education, and outreach, the facility serves as a hub for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. It includes both a research lab (218 Durham) and a teaching lab (248 Durham), offering a dedicated computing environment for spatial analysis applications.

The GIS Facility has a research lab where hired undergraduate and graduate students can work on Facility projects. If you would like to be considered for a position, please email your resume to Josh Obrecht and he will keep it on file and reach out when opportunities arise.

248 Durham is where many of the GIS classes are held each semester. This lab consists of 21 student computers and 1 instructor computer with the specifications below. It also contains a 4K projector and 4 monitor/docking stations for laptop connections.

  • Dell 3460 Small Form Factor with 13th Gen Intel i7-13700 2.10 GHz processor 16 cores, 64 MB RAM, Nvidia T1000 8 GB video card.
  • Installed software: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS City Engine, ArcGIS Drone2Map, GeoDa, QGIS, Google Earth Pro, R, RStudio, Quarto, PyCharm, Visual Studio Code, SQL Server 2022 Express

Outside of class hours, the lab is open for public use. The lab is open when the Durham Center is open. If you would like to reserve time in the lab for a training or other event, please contact Josh Obrecht.
