The ISU GIS Support and Research Facility, along with Parks Library, hosted GIS Day 2023 on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in The Catalyst at Parks Library (Room 199). This was a come-and-go event, allowing attendees to stay as long as they liked. GIS Day was designed for everyone, from the GIS-curious to the experienced GIS user. Throughout the day, speakers shared their research from around campus, provided information about GIS opportunities and programs on campus, and offered free GIS swag and food. A map competition with prizes also took place. The Mapping Masterminds competition was open to everyone, including non-ISU staff and students, and featured three categories with prizes for the winning entries. For additional competition details, participants could visit Mapping Masterminds.

Welcome and introduction of the ISU GIS Support and Research Facility by Kevin Kane
This presentation will focus on how GIS is being used at the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University. GIS serves a critical role in the area of traffic safety, including data integration/assimilation, spatial analysis and network screening. In addition, the presentation will discuss how GIS is used with IoT devices such as connected arrow boards to improve the accuracy of work zone data with real-time information from the roadway.

As precision agriculture continues to advance, there is increasing interest in managing crops at smaller scales to increase efficiency and yield. This presentation will highlight the collaboration between the Daily Erosion Project (DEP) and the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework (ACPF), focusing on the development of a GIS tool. This tool, designed to be a part of the ACPF toolbox, aims to identify vulnerable agricultural fields and specific parts within the field to soil erosion at the HUC12 watershed level. Leveraging DEP’s estimations from HUC12 to field-level and raster average soil loss/gains is key in locating and prioritizing Best Management Practices (BMPs) to address soil erosion in agricultural landscapes.

This project showcases nearly 2,000 trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants on the ISU campus through an ArcGIS Online map application. Using seasonal photos of mapped plant specimens, you can use the app as a plant identification guide on your virtual – or actual walks on the beautiful ISU campus.
